Widespread Flu Cases in Missouri

Flu 2016The flu seems to be widespread for the Christmas holidays!  That is what the state surveillance is showing, and also Ste Genevieve County.  According to state statistics and predictions, the flu is more severe this year, with more hospitalizations and ICU admissions due to complications.  This is mostly due to the H3N2 Influenza A strain that seems to be circulating.

Also according to state statistics, the flu is most prominent in school-age children.  This is not true for Ste. Genevieve County.  So far, in Ste Genevieve County, the most prominent age group is adults aged 50-64 years who are unvaccinated.  We believe that we are seeing fewer flu illness in school-age children due to school-based flu vaccination clinics in all county schools.

Flu vaccination continues to be the first line of defense against the flu, along with these health tips for the holidays:   frequent and thorough hand washing, cover your cough, get plenty of sleep and good nutrition, avoid sick people, clean and disinfect surfaces at home, and stay home if you are sick.
