Warning Regarding Abuse of Anti-Diarrhea Medication

Health care symbolRecent information has been made available on the current misuse of over the counter anti diarrhea medications.

The diarrhea drug, Imodium, has been being used as an alternative to opioid painkillers to get high.  The key ingredient, loperamide, is an opioid agent and in large doses, can affect receptors in the brain to cause a euphoria or high.  Doses would have to be extreme-50 to 300 pills of Imodium daily to achieve a high.  Please take note if you observe excessive amounts of this medication being purchased or used in your home.

Parents, teachers, health care workers need to be aware that all drugs, including over-the-counter medications, can be dangerous when not used as directed.
