October is National Dental Hygiene Month!

dentalOctober is National Dental Hygiene Month!

October brings many wonderful things, pumpkin spice, cooler weather, changing leaves, candy…but it also brings AWARENESS! October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a time to bring out awareness for oral health issues and to acknowledge one division of dental professionals who tend to your teeth: Dental Hygienists.

Dental Hygienists are clinical providers who help you put together a plan of action to keep your smile healthy! They work closely alongside dentists to evaluate, treat, and educate you on your oral health!

Dental Hygienists can either have a Bachelor’s degree or an Associates depending on which dental hygiene program they attend. Most have about four years of schooling when they graduate their program. Once graduated, they must take national and regional board exams and maintain a state license. Most will tell you that this educational process is both grueling but very rewarding!

They work directly with patients, with or without a dentist’s supervision, cleaning teeth, taking x-rays, intraoral photos, and other diagnostic information so a dentist can help diagnose any issues you might have. Dental Hygienists also perform periodontal disease treatments that can help you keep your teeth for a lifetime!

Dental professionals have the caring, attentive nature that helps them recognize and address issues that their patients are facing! They have the heart to help!

So next time you are in the dental office, say hello to your Dental Hygienist and wish them a Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!
